International and domestic patient transfers
EMA Finland annually arranges and carries out hundreds of patient transfers for both its Finnish and international customers. Depending on the situation and the patient’s medical condition, it is decided whether the patient requires the escort of a nurse or doctor, or both, and can the patient travel without a medical escort.
The transport method is also selected according to the situation, conditions and, above all, the patient’s medical condition. Transports from nearby areas can occasionally be arranged by ambulance, train or ferry. In case of longer distances, the most suitable transport method is often a flight. Being familiar with the special arrangements of air transports, exceptional permits and the restrictions and requirements of different airlines requires expertise. Experience and a timely-planned patient transfer enable the patient to return home in a risk-free and smooth manner.
“When does the patient need to travel on a stretcher, when is a Business class seat needed or when are additional seats in Economy class sufficient? Which airlines and routes can accommodate stretchers and the supply of additional oxygen?”
The starting point is that travelling does not cause any medical risk to the patient or excess costs to our customers.
When transport cannot be carried out with a commercial flight due to e.g. the severity of the illness, EMA Finland is specialised in the transport of patients and special groups with challenging illnesses. These include, for example, intensive care patients, special patients, premature babies and ECMO patients. Air ambulances and special equipment can be used for transporting these patient groups. There are also situations in which the patient cannot be transported by air before additional procedures.
The planning and arrangement of a patient transfer requires versatile special expertise, in which both medical details and other travel restrictions must be considered. Prerequisites for a successful transfer include good timing, appropriate equipment as well as experienced staff that specialises in out-patient care and patient transfers.
